The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
