Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
